What should I expect during my first massage therapy visit?

Massage appointments at Equilibrium require the same intake and health history forms as other appointments here. Your massage therapist will review your intake forms and any notes from other providers as necessary, and they will talk with you at the beginning of your session to establish what areas you would like worked on and if there are any conditions that need to be addressed. Your massage therapist may perform certain assessments and testing to evaluate your condition, and to see if you have any presenting complaints.

Where will my massage session take place and what should I wear?

Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a private, comfortable room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort. Your massage therapist may ask you your temperature preferences and adjust the temperature of the table and add or remove blankets or heat packs as needed.

For a full body massage it is customary to undress completely, however, you may dress-down to your comfort level. Your massage therapist will give you privacy to undress, and you will be covered with a sheet and blanket at all times except for the area being worked on.

What do I do during a massage therapy treatment?

Make yourself comfortable. If your therapist wants you to adjust your position, she or he will either move you or will ask you to move as needed. Otherwise, change your position at anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It’s up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.

How should I expect to feel after my massage?

Massage is meant to relax your muscles, increase range of motion, and promote blood and lymph flow. Depending on the techniques used during your session, you may feel sore later that day or the next day. Drinking water after your message will help hydrate the tissues that have been worked and help prevent soreness.

Will massage oils make me break out?

Equilibrium massage therapists use hypoallergenic massage oils or lotions. However, if you have sensitivity to certain types of oils or lotion please bring it to our attention, as we usually have an assortment of oils and lotions on hand.

Can I choose my massage therapist?

Yes!  While each of our massage therapists are wonderful and carefully chosen with high standards, they each have their own unique style and specialties. We recommend trying a few therapists to find your best fit. Many of our patients enjoy seeing different therapists on a rotating basis to take advantage of all the therapists’ different strengths. Take a look at our staff bios, and always feel free to email our front desk staff with questions.
